So, I received some late work today.... from last school year! I have since moved from teaching sixth-grade ELA to fifth-grade math... AND he didn't even follow directions!! đ
Your post...#relatable! Granted this is not nearly as bad as yours I, too, wanted to add to the late work discussion:
For the last month, I've been telling my (college) students the last day to submit all assignments is December 1st. Mind you, this includes any work they may have missed/failed to turn in from the beginning of the semester. I've tossed my late work (typical point deduction) policy out the window, and even allowed myself to grade based on completion as opposed to the quality of the work - of course providing robust feedback on how to improve :-). I even sent individual emails to (college) students outlining what's missing and instructions on how to submit. I open my inbox and what do I find? "CaN I sUbMiT lAtE WoRk?!" even worst parents of (college) students demanding I allow their young-adults submit late work (Let's not talk about FERPA guidelines)!
I realize students are "living through a pandemic and they learn better face-to-face" as they love to tell me! However, I too am living through the same pandemic, learning to provide instruction and academic support services virtually. This is in addition to working two jobs and helping my family. I set this deadline to ensure I had enough time to provide feedback and submit their final grades on-time (because only the Lord will forgive Me if I miss a deadline set by administration but "give the students grace"). Sadly, I know my boss will require me to accept and grade all their assignments right up until final grades are due.
To my friends in the K-12 universe, we feel for and with you in higher education.
