Naughty kids to get recess

So supposedly our board is looking at creating a policy that will no longer allow teachers to keep kids in at recess because of defiant behavior. My understanding is “Jimmy” can refuse to do any or all work in the room (and I have a few of these students in my room) and I will not be able to keep him in at time recess. What is the natural consequence supposed to be?! My admin said that one option would be to send things home for extra homework... :/

Like that "extra" homework would ever get done! We can't take away recess either....poor little "precious" wouldn't get their exercise. They have taken away all of our power.

  • We are at midterms 1/2 way through the school year. I just got a new student assigned to my chemistry class. I asked him where he left off in chemistry in his last school. He tells me he has never taken chemistry before. I emailed guidance to let them know that he was incorrectly placed. I received a response stating that he has not been incorrectly placed, he is a senior and needs chemistry to graduate. Therefore it is my responsibility to "get him caught up" so he can pass and graduate this year. He's missed 1/2 the year.... And I'm just supposed to "catch him up"
  • This school year our union and the district worked out a deal so that the teachers get more PLC time. Great! Right? More time to work on lesson planning creating rigor, relevance and yadda yadda yadda. Of course, our departments can't do the extra PLC time by ourselves, we shouldn't need to worry about that. We will have the administration (sarcasm right here) to organize when and where we get our extra PLC time. They decided to do it on Tuesday (a day we already have dedicated to PLC in the morning). It will be a half pull out day so I'm teaching for 1-3 periods and meet during 4-6 periods. I'm guessing our lunch time is the same but we were told that we do not get our preps if it is during that PLC time since "We are not teaching students" during that time. I know this sounds like a union issue but, I want to wait and see how this time goes and if anything else comes up.
  • Found out today that I will be involuntarily moved from my self-contained special ed program to an unfilled middle school resource room position at different school on the other side of the district because our admin overstaffed our program and the extra teacher they hired can't be moved as a "new" teacher in their second year. Fuck this.
